At 0500hrs today, Faroese time, pilot whales were spotted outside of the town of Hosvik in the northern island of Streymoy in the archipelago. Boats arrived to chase the pod at around 0600 hrs. Police estimated around 150 cetaceans in the pod, being mostly pilot whales but also other dolphins. The whales were beached in Hvalvik and killing started at around 0700. A crowd of around 100 people had gathered to witness the killing.
In the end, 150 pilot whales and 15 white sided dolphins lost their lives today.
